The Most Prominent Ancient Yogic Literature

Hatha Yoga is the study of the energies of the Sun and Moon. It aims at managing the flow of prana by proactively involving the physical practice of asana, the subtle practice of pranayama, and relaxation.

 

Hatha Yoga has a wide range of schools and teaching methods as well as approaches. Despite the differences there exists one common theme across all hatha yoga classes: One can concentrate on exact alignment of the body, another on coordination of breath and movement, another on maintaining each position for a set amount of time, and still another on the flow from one posture to the next.

 

According to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the most prominent ancient yogic literature, Hatha yoga is believed to be the source of all disciplines of yoga. There are a total of 84 original asanas in this book inclusive of both standing as well as sitting asanas. Such a Pradipika is the holy grail for any individual who wishes to attain enlightenment as it is a descriptive and detailed guide to the physical, spiritual as well as mental advantages of each individualistic asana of the classical hatha yoga.

 

Pranayama, asana, mudras, bandhas, mantras, yoga postures, relaxation, and visualization are some of the most common asanas composing any typical Hatha yoga session. In fact yoga, contrary to popular assumptions, is not just about getting your body flexible, but also about making your mind flexible. A strong meditation practice can help you achieve deeper levels of understanding of meditation and unblock your energies.
